Thanks to all for helping our third Gazan family! In early October we sent out a request in Crossroads for help providing clothing and a few miscellaneous items for Alaa Hammouda's sister and her family. Her sister, Areej Hammouda, received a full scholarship for an MA in Public Health from Rutgers University. The University is providing housing for Areej, her husband and 3 kids, but the family needed additional assistance, in particular, in obtaining winter clothing.
Areej received straight A's in all her courses this first semester and the family is adjusting well. Her husband cannot work, but is actively studying English. One child is in school, one in a Moslem day care, and the third is at home. Areej and her family were able to travel to visit Alaa, Rami and their four kids in North Carolina for the holidays—a wonderful treat as the families continue to struggle with lost family lives, and the terror of following what is going on in Gaza. Many of their family remain there. On a happy note, please see the celebration over a lovely Palestinian dish, maqlouba!
