I’m New

Welcome Message From Our Rector

Rev. Sari Ateek, Rector

Welcome to St. John’s! If you are learning about us for the first time, I pray you catch a glimpse of our dynamic community and our inclusion of all God’s children.

Like you, each parishioner at St. John’s is on a sacred journey of faith and life. We value the uniqueness of each journey, trusting that God actively pursues and meets us right where we are. And this is just the beginning!

Come and experience. We welcome you!

– Rev. Sari Ateek

FAQ’s

Here are some frequently asked questions:

What happens in a service?

The service lasts about an hour. All services include Scripture readings, a sermon (about 15 minutes), and Holy Communion (also known as Holy Eucharist).  All services include music except our 8:00 am service. Learn more about our Worship Services.

Who can take communion?

At St. John’s, we practice Open Communion, which means that we welcome everyone to Christ’s table to partake of bread and wine. You do not have to be a member of our church, or any church, or even baptized to take communion. You may join us at the altar for communion, come to the altar for a blessing, or remain in your pew during communion.

What do I wear?

You may wear whatever you want. Some people wear dresses or suits and ties, but many more are business casual, and still others wear jeans and t-shirts. Our most casual service is our “Come as You Are” service on Sundays at 5:00 pm.

How many people attend St. John’s?

On Sundays during the school year, about 300 people total attend our four worship services. Our largest service is our mid-morning service, and our smallest services are early Sunday morning and Sunday evening.  We also livestream our 10:30 AM Sunday worship on our YouTube channel . Whichever option you prefer, we always have plenty of room for you and your family!

Will I be asked to give money?

We provide an offering plate during our services for our members and regular attendees to place their offerings. If you are a visitor or guest, please do not feel obligated to give.

How do I get to St. John’s?

See Location and Parking for directions and a map. Please call 301-654-7767 if you need any help finding our church.

What do my kids do?

Children are welcomed and loved at St. John’s, especially during our worship services. We offer a Kids Kits for worship, nursery care (see Children in Worship) as well as the biggest draw, church school at 9:00 am on Sundays during the school year. Don’t be surprised if they have so much fun that they beg you to come back!

What can I do while my kids are in church school?

Many parents attend our Adult Forum series in our Parish Hall during the church school hour, from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Others visit our Library for some peace and quiet or hang out with old friends and new in our Lounge.

Do you have coffee?

Yes!  On Sunday mornings, we have free coffee, tea, and snacks available in the West Avenue lobby, Parish Hall, and Lounge.

Anything else?

Please contact us with any other questions you may have. We would love to hear from you.
