Teens Speak Out Against Gun Violence

Sunday, June 1  |  10:00 - 11:00 AM  |  Parish Hall / Zoom  -

Hear from young GVP leaders fighting for a better future at a time when gun violence is the #1 killer of children and adolescents. How does advocacy inspire them to keep going, despite their fears of a school shooting and the seemingly intractable political divide around guns? St. John's parishioner and B-CC High School teacher David Lopilato will moderate a discussion with teen leaders from two area schools:

  • Rachel Sachs, a junior at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. and a member of the Students Against Gun Violence club. Rachel volunteers with Moms Demand Action and participated in Advocacy Day, where she lobbied Maryland District 18 legislators for stronger gun safety legislation. In her free time, Rachel enjoys playing soccer, writing poetry, and riding her bike around Rock Creek.
  • Rachel Barold, a junior at Walt Whitman High School, where she serves as President of the Students Demand Action chapter. As a fervent common-sense gun policy advocate, Rachel spoke at the Maryland Capitol during Moms Demand Action Advocacy Day. She has helped double her chapter's membership and organized multiple events in her school's community. In Rachel's free time, she does competitive high school debate, volunteers with animal rescues, and bakes!

Join us on Sunday, June 1, for what is sure to be an inspiring discussion, at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall or by Zoom (link: bit.ly/STJNmain).

This forum is open to the community, so please invite friends, neighbors, and colleagues to attend with you!
