Anne Derse

Community Life Coordinator

As a Deacon and the St. John’s Community Life Coordinator, Anne works to create a strong, welcoming, caring and giving community. She connects parishioners and newcomers to our church’s groups and ministries, helping people find the best ways to give their gifts of faith, talent, life and professional experience to serve God; to help each other and our neighbors; and to deepen in spiritual development, discipleship and community.

She comes to St. John’s after a 31-year career as a diplomat, living abroad in Trinidad, Singapore, Korea, the Philippines, Belgium, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Lithuania. She studied French and Linguistics at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, completed an MA in International Relations at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and joined the Foreign Service in 1981. She settled in Bethesda with her family in 2012, after retiring from the State Department.

Anne can be reached any time at She can meet on Monday and Thursday, and warmly welcomes ideas on how to strengthen the community of St. John’s.
