Thanksgiving came a few days early this year as our November 16 Third Sunday Supper—hosted by the Ukrainian Support Group (USG)—raised the funds necessary to purchase a critically needed Emergency Evacuation Vehicle for war-torn Ukraine. This all-terrain vehicle will work the front lines, getting into locations that conventional ambulances cannot reach.
The dinner, attended by more than 80 guests, created the perfect opportunity for generous giving. Our partner, St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, served a gourmet Ukrainian buffet complete with wine. Guests were serenaded by a very talented young lady, Mariia Bohomolova, singing Ukrainian songs of freedom and accompanying herself on the bandura, a traditional folk instrument. Her compelling performance was followed by a short video, created by St. Andrew, that explored the depth of commitment made by volunteers from both St. Andrew and St. John's. (Watch the video!) Father Volodymyr Steliac, Rector of St. Andrew, gave a heartfelt and compelling update on what he called the "dire" situation in Ukraine, but noted that St. John's continued efforts on behalf of Ukraine provide a huge morale boost to the troops in Ukraine.
[Note: The gorgeous floral centerpieces that you see in the photo were created by Lizzie Glidden-Boyle and donated by the Flower Guild as a tribute to Ukraine. ]
As Co-Chairs of the USG, we sincerely thank all who gave to make the evening a success and help us reach our goal. It is not an exaggeration to say that the generosity expressed that evening will save many innocent Ukrainian lives! If you still wish to contribute (in Breeze, select "Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine"), we will use any additional donations for medical supplies to support the emergency vehicle. Slava Ukraini!
