Milestones in Ministry: Congratulations to Rev. Anne Derse and Wesley Rowell

We have much to celebrate this weekend as two cherished members of our community reach important milestones in their ministry journeys.

First, we congratulate the Rev. Anne Derse, our faithful Deacon and Minister for Community Engagement, who will graduate this coming Monday, May 12, from Wesley Theological Seminary with her Master of Theology degree. This achievement has been years in the making—nine, to be exact—and speaks volumes about Anne’s persistence and devotion. Balancing parish life, family, and ministry while pursuing graduate-level theological studies is no small feat. Her graduation ceremony will take place at the National Cathedral, a fitting setting for such a meaningful occasion. Anne’s commitment to deepening her understanding of faith and theology has enriched not only her own vocation, but the life of this parish as well. We are incredibly proud of her.

We also celebrate with our beloved seminarian, Wesley Rowell, who graduated yesterday (May 8) from Virginia Theological Seminary, completing his Certificate in Anglican Studies. This marks the final stage of his seminary education and prepares him for ordination to the transitional diaconate, and soon after to the Sacred Order of Priest. During his time at St. John’s, Wesley has served in worship almost every Sunday, and shared his gifts for preaching, teaching, and thoughtful engagement with scripture and tradition. His presence among us has been a blessing, and we’re grateful to have walked with him during this season of discernment and preparation.

Both Anne and Wesley show us that formation doesn’t happen overnight—and it doesn’t happen alone. Their paths have been shaped by prayer, community, and a deep call to serve the Church. As a parish, it has been our joy to support them both. Watching them learn, grow, and now step into new chapters of ministry reminds us of how important it is to be a church that encourages and celebrates all kinds of callings.

We give thanks for their faith, their courage, and their hard work. And we offer our prayers for the journeys ahead—trusting that God, who has brought them this far, will continue to guide their steps.

Congratulations, Anne and Wesley. We are so proud of you, and we are honored to be part of your story.
