Building on a Strong Foundation: Making a Difference

A little over three years ago, I found myself free to make some changes in my life. After several years of full-time caretaking for my late husband, I was determined to become a more active volunteer on social justice issues, and to find a church where I might feel comfortable. This second goal was not a given, so I started with community service. A neighbor told me about a great food distribution group in downtown Bethesda. I quickly learned that Nourishing Bethesda was started by folks at nearby St. John’s, so I checked out the website and was amazed by the number of ministries! I wanted to become a part of that work to make a positive difference, but wondered if I could be comfortable in the church itself.

The first time I entered St. John’s Nave that summer, I felt surprisingly at ease. The greeters at the door were welcoming, the service was comforting, and the sermon was relatable and thought-provoking. I left with a feeling of peace, hope, and even joy. While doubts about some parts of the liturgy remained and my attendance was initially somewhat sporadic, the church drew me in closer over time. I valued the opportunity to learn together in ministries, forums, and special events, and to simply enjoy the camaraderie of fellow St. John’s parishioners. I welcomed the opportunity to become a committed member and supporter of this community.

As I have taken on more responsibilities with the Refugee Ministry and Eco-Action, I have found the openness, caring, and support of parishioners and staff buoys me beyond what I ever expected. As for my doubts about some of the liturgy and other big-picture theological questions, I feel I can safely begin to explore these issues in more depth and to continue to grow spiritually at St. John’s.

Please join me in pledging to support all the ways St. John’s makes a difference in our lives and in the lives of others!
