Breaking bread together is core to St. John’s mission of building community. For over 80 years, St. John’s kitchen has hummed with activity, playing a central role in our parish life and ministries. From Third Sunday Suppers, to this week’s annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Easter brunches, Shepherd’s Table, ministry fundraisers, and so much more, our kitchen has been a space for connecting and caring with our fellow parishioners and wider community.
These events—and more—all reflect St. John’s admirable legacy of fellowship and community engagement. Now, after decades of loving use, our kitchen needs an update. Safety upgrades and replacement of equipment that is far beyond its useful life will restore the kitchen as a vibrant hub for parish fellowship.
Last year, the Property Committee and Friends of the Kitchen identified modest, but costly, upgrades and repairs needed for a safe and operable kitchen. These upgrades include new appliances (a range, griddle, convection oven, refrigerator and freezer); new, clean, and code-compliant butcher blocks and cabinetry; and essential safety improvements, such as a new exhaust hood with fire suppressant technology, as well as the mechanical and electrical work needed to support it.
Over the next few months, St. John’s is launching a special Keep Our Kitchen Cooking Appeal to raise funds for these upgrades, which will keep St. John’s cooking, connecting, and caring for decades to come.
In the meantime, we invite you to stop by the kitchen, reach out to Keep Our Kitchen Cooking Task Force members, and send us your stories on how the kitchen has played a role in your fellowship at St. John’s. Please also check out our bulletin board, outside the Library/Lounge and across from the stairs to the basement level.
