In early September, Major Azziz came to Nourishing Bethesda so excited he could hardly speak. He showed us a video of his family boarding a plane to America. Five years ago, the Air Force Major barely escaped Taliban hunters, forced to leave his family behind. Since then, we’ve helped him survive in a new country while he fought to reunite his family.
Now, finally, they were coming—and we were the first people he wanted to tell. There were hugs and wet eyes as he thanked us repeatedly for being there when he was alone, without resources or family.
Stories like this are what Nourishing Bethesda is all about.

Nourishing Bethesda started right here at St. John’s during the pandemic six years ago—and its critical support helped grow it into one of the fastest growing and most successful Montgomery County non-profits coming out of the pandemic, currently feeding 10,000 people a month.
There’s much to share, including details of this year's Great Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway—during which we will distribute full Thanksgiving meal kits to 1,200 families—and details on how food insecurity plagues places even as wealthy as Bethesda.
