Have you ever said something you meant as a compliment, but noticed the other person seemed uncomfortable or hurt? Have you ever made an assumption about someone based on their accent, appearance or where they live, only to find out you were completely wrong? Do you wonder how this type of thing impacts education in our county?
Please join us on Sunday, October 11, starting at 2:00 pm when we welcome students from the Minority Scholars Program to tell us about their current experiences, board members to tell us about their past experiences and all to tell us about MSP's blueprint for change.
MSP’s mission statement is "to empower students to analyze and disrupt racial inequities and systems of oppression." Their vision statement is "to create a world in which black and brown students and their intersectional identities experience true equity, a sense of belonging, and fully thrive in school in our communities." MSP has been in existence for 20+ years and has a presence in all of the high schools, many of the middle schools and a few elementary schools, with the goal of reaching every public school in Montgomery County. MSP operates within the school system but is a separate 501c3 and is entirely youth driven. They have 1000 students attending their annual retreat. St. John's has been exploring a new partnership with the Minority Scholars Program since the spring when we became a gold sponsor of the 3rd Annual Youth Anti-Racist Film Festival hosted by the Minority Scholars Program. This was an amazing event; some of the film shorts are available here. MSP was also the recipient of a $5000 grant from the St. John's Norwood Racial Justice and Equity Fund in the summer of 2026.
