Feature Article: Immigrant & Refugee Ministry Grows Through Diocese’s EMBRACE Initiative

St. John’s Immigrant and Refugee Ministry continues to grow and deepen its engagement. Through the diocesan program EMBRACE, a group of more than a dozen St. John’s parishioners and friends has formed a “care pod” to support a family of five—three adults and two children—connected with San Mateo Episcopal Church in Hyattsville.

The care pod offers practical and spiritual support, including grocery shopping, transportation, prayer, and friendship. Two of the adults in the family are now employed, and the children are enrolled in school. One of the young women, who previously played the violin, is eager to resume but no longer has access to an instrument. (If you have a violin to donate, or know someone who might, we would love to hear from you!)

In addition, we have joined San Mateo Episcopal Church—part of our diocesan community—in their monthly food distribution effort, which serves more than 280 families. Many churches in our diocese are contributing to this important ministry. St. John has begun collecting donations of cooking oil (canola or vegetable oil, 40-ounces or less, plastic bottles only) on Sundays for monthly delivery. You will see a donation bin in the north hallway (between the Chapel and Sacristy). Financial donations are also welcome. The need is especially urgent as many San Mateo parishioners face significant challenges related to recent immigration policy changes and ongoing uncertainties.

Recently, members of our group attended a vibrant worship service at San Mateo, where Father Vidal Rivas warmly recognized St. John’s and expressed gratitude for our support. Following the service, we joined in a festive lunch and talent show celebrating Family Day.

If you are interested in getting involved, please consider donating to the monthly cooking oil collection, making a financial contribution to the ministry—or contributing a violin! To learn more, please use the form below to contact Bonnie, Yoon, and Margaret.
