Music at St. John’s

Music is an integral part of what we do in worship at St. John’s. Hymns, anthems, service music, and voluntaries knit together the readings, preaching, and pageantry that form our Sunday liturgies. Everyone at St. John’s has an avenue for participation in our music program, whether by singing “with gusto” from the pews, participating in one of our ensembles, or sharing gifts as an instrumentalist. In a postmodern age that so often isolates the individual, St. John’s music program remains an important source of community – by singing (or ringing!) together, working to achieve musical excellence, we begin to understand and deepen our care for one another.

St. John’s Choir

The St. John’s Choir is for adults and teenagers who enjoy singing and worshiping together along with professional singers who provide support and leadership in our 10:30am service. The choir finds its foundation in the Anglican choral tradition, mixed with a variety of repertoire from all times and places. Some musical experience and consistent rehearsal attendance are expected. Rehearsals are on Thursday nights, 7:30 – 9:00 pm.

Norwood Ringers

The Norwood Ringers explore handbell ringing, a fun, easily-learned skill for anyone with a little experience finding notes on a staff and keeping a steady rhythm. We are in special need this year of more participants to ensure coverage for our three-octave set of bells. So, if you’ve ever been curious about bell ringing, now is the time! The group learns anthems and hymn accompaniments to enhance our worship experience about once a month.  Rehearsals are on Thursdays evenings, 6:00 -7:00 pm.

Choristers

St. John’s RSCM-based program for young Choristers is open to children ages eight and up. Alongside our Director of Music and a professional Vocal Coach, young musicians develop the skills needed to be a successful singer, as well as an informed leader of music in worship. These are skills that bear fruit for a lifetime! Find more information and register at Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings. See the Choristers page for more details.
