In observation of Black History Month, our February 5-19 Adult Education hours have spotlighted “The History of Racism in our Own Backyard.”
On February 19, we’re pleased to welcome Chuck Williams, a senior lay leader in the Scotland AME Zion Church, a historic Black congregation on Seven Locks Road in Potomac. The neighborhood of Scotland was founded by freed Black men and women in the 1870’s. The Scotland Church is registered as a National Historic Site. The church was almost destroyed by repeated flooding after the County government relocated Seven Locks Road, placing it in a flood plain. This year a major interfaith and community effort led by Glenstone Museum, the Second Century Project, has been mounted to save and rebuild the church. Learn more about the fascinating history of Scotland and its church and how St. John’s is getting involved in the campaign to save it as part of our work on racial justice and equity!
Please join us for these enlightening sessions at 9:00 am, either on Zoom or in the Parish Hall. (For the Zoom link, please call the church office at 301-654-7767).
