On Sunday, November 24th, all loose plate cash and undesignated checks will be donated to Lutheran Social Services of the National Capitol Area (LSS/NCA). The vision of LSS/NCA is: “By God’s grace, we provide ministries of compassion, justice, and hope to the most vulnerable in the metro DC area, working toward wholeness and self-sufficiency.”
Originally founded in 1917 by a group of eight Lutheran Churches and organizations, LSS/NCA is now an independent nonprofit which partners with congregations of all faiths in welcoming refugees, building families, and offering wellness support to youth. In addition to its refugee ministry, LSS/NCA works in the areas of family reunification, adoption, youth development and wellness, unaccompanied refugee minors, and immigration and citizenship.
St. John’s has partnered with LSS/NCA’s refugee ministry since 2017. Our efforts, led by Melanie Folstad, began at LSS/NCA partnership Level Four, which was limited to furnishing and equipping an apartment. Success in furnishing three apartments built momentum and interest, and in the fall of 2017, the Vestry approved a higher Level One partnership, committing to find and subsidize housing and provide mentoring and other supports for a refugee family. Under the leadership of Christie King and Nancy Adams, St. John’s has met that commitment over the past year, supporting the Kabira-Kambere family with housing, tutoring, access to health care and many other services (see the latest update on the family in last week’s edition of Crossroads).
Your generous donations on November 24th will help children and families in need find comfort, support, and guidance through LSS/NCA. For every dollar donated, 73 cents goes to LSS/NCA programming, directly serving neighbors in the Washington DC Metro Community. Make checks payable to St. John’s with LSS/NCA on the memo line.
