As you count your blessings this Thanksgiving, consider the gift of education. Your fluent English allows you to communicate effectively at work, at home, in a doctor’s office, and other settings. However, 135,000 Montgomery County residents have limited ability to communicate in English, 58,000 lack a high school diploma, and many are unable to read and write above a 4th grade level. The problem can span generations because children of poorly-educated, unemployed parents are 5 times more likely to drop out of school than other children.
On Sunday, November 25, you can help the Literacy Council of Montgo mery County (LCMC) address this problem. To carry out its mission of “building skills for life,” LCMC offers free and low-cost classes in English as a Second Language, basic literacy, digital literacy and GED preparation. It also provides individual tutoring and access to computer-based learning in the language laboratory. More information about LCMC, including volunteer tutoring opportunities, is available here.
Please make out checks to St. John’s with LCMC on the memo line.
