Men’s Book Club – Manhattan Beach
Crime, deceit, and tenderness. Manhattan Beach is Jennifer Egan’s first novel since she won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2011. The focal point of this novel is Anna, who is 11 when the tale begins, and emerges over the next decade as a tough and ambitious women. Most importantly, Anna challenges the deep-seated gender roles of the 1930s and 1940s by doggedly pursuing a goal to be a Navy diver during the War. A fascinating array of characters surround Anna, including several members of the Mob who exhibit, among other traits, some surprising virtue.
Egan employs the main characters’ many secrets – including Anna’s – as catalysts for the violence and love that ripple throughout the novel. While Egan slowly and carefully illuminates the nature of her characters, this most assuredly is also a tale of crime, violence, and adventure, set in a period of vast change in American culture.
Come join us to discuss Manhattan Beach on March 14 at Kirk Davidson’s home. The meeting begins at 7:30 pm.
