Forum: All About Hallowe’en, Day of the Dead/Dia de Los Muertos, All Souls & All Saints

October 29, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Did you know that when we say “hallowed be thy name” in the Lord’s Prayer, we are using an old English word meaning “blessed” or “sainted”? The old English name for All Saints’ Day was All Hallows’ Day, and the evening before that was All Hallows’ Even, which we now know as Hallowe’en. This is why Halloween is always on October 31. Come to the 10 a.m. Adult Forum on Sunday, October 29 and learn more about these holidays, what they have in common, and how they are celebrated in different traditions.

Following presentations by parishioners Ann Ramsey-Moor, Walter Smith, Julie Inlow Muñoz, and Leo Muñoz, we’ll have Day of the Dead-related workshops in making traditional paper marigolds and face-painting, while enjoying some special Dia de los Muertos bread called Pan de Muerto. Many people make altars or ofrendas (offerings) in their homes to honor their loved ones who have died. We’ll have an example on display and we encourage parishioners to bring photos of their dearly departed to celebrate on our ofrenda.

This forum is part of a Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos/All Saints/All Souls weekend of events, organized as part of St. John’s year-long 150th Anniversary Celebration, that begins with a screening of Coco, Disney’s animated classic about Dia de los Muertos, on Friday, October 27.  Click here to read more about that movie night.
