Blessing of the Animals
Our pets are important parts of our family and a regular reminder that we are part of God’s cosmic family.
St. Francis of Assisi knew that well. As a merchant’s son-turned-monk in the early 1200s, St. Francis prophetically argued that humanity was neglecting the importance of experiencing God through creation. As the popularity of garden statues and bird baths in his image attest, he continues to be best known for his respect for animals!
On Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 5:00 PM, St. John’s will join other churches around the world to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. The service will include an Animal Blessing and special “Eucharist,” or prayer of thanksgiving, for creation.
This will be an adventurous gathering of gratefulness for 5o’clock worshipers, pets of all kinds (real, pictures, or stuffed) and their owners, animal lovers, and those who are just curious. In addition, we will welcome veterinarians and technicians for a special blessing.
We hope you’ll join us in giving thanks for the diversity of animals that enrich our lives – from the direct blessings of “family members” to the indirect blessings of those that offer nutrition, protection, and labor around the world.
And we hope you’ll also invite others to come catch a glimpse of God’s love in our community!
