Ahli Arab Hospital Fundraiser

July 7, 2019
11:00 am - 11:45 am

St. John’s successfully raised funds for the replacement of the ambulance for St. Luke’s Hospital in Nablus and it is our third year supporting part of a nurse’s salary there. In fact, this year we were able to fund a full nurse’s salary thanks to you, St. John’s caring parishioners. We have made a difference in humanitarian services in this region. Can we do more?

During the spring adult forum series, St. John’s Holy Land Committee explored how we can do more to make a meaningful difference in this region. Can we make a difference in a place as challenging as Gaza? As it turns out, for decades Christians have been working to make a difference every day in Gaza City at the Ahli Arab Hospital, a mission of the Diocese of Jerusalem.

This article describes the dire situation at the hospital, its needs, and how Christians are living out their faith in Gaza City. According to the article “The hospital is currently struggling in part because of a Trump administration decision in January to withhold $65 million of a $125 million contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).” John Lent of the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem (AFEDJ) met with members of the committee in May. He pointed to a need to help the hospital’s community clinic that serves malnourished children, burn victims, and breast cancer patients. The clinic is down to being able to be open only one day a week; the cost to keep the clinic open for a day is $5000-$6000. Can we support AFEDJ in keeping the clinic being open for a day? Can we serve as an example to other Episcopal congregations as we did with the St. Luke’s Hospital ambulance fundraising effort?

Three years ago, St. John’s raised funds for Ahli Arab Hospital and the Holy Land Committee would like to do that again. How can you help? On two Sundays, June 30th and July 7th, there will be members of the Holy Land Committee at a table in the lobby collecting contributions and available to answer questions from 11:00 to 11:45 am. Checks should be made payable to St. John’s with “Ahli Hospital” in the memo line. If you are unable to stop by, you can send a check to St. John’s, drop it in the offering plate noted for “Ahli Hospital,” or contribute through Breeze. You can also give on Breeze
(select “Ahli Arab Hospital” in the drop down menu).

Thank you St. John’s for all of the ways you have supported the Holy Land Committees efforts to make a difference in Jerusalem!
