St John’s is excited to launch Furnishing Newcomers, a new initiative that responds to an urgent need for furniture, housewares, and helping hands to furnish living spaces for migrant families and individuals who recently arrived from the southern border. As its first project, the ministry will assist a family from Nicaragua, who is moving to a basement apartment in Takoma Park on Saturday, April 29.
Please see the SignUp Genius to learn how to contribute. Donated items may be brought to St. John’s Parish Hall during the following times:
- Tuesday, April 25, 9:00 – 11:00 am
- Wednesday, April 26, 2:00 – 4:00 pm
- Thursday, April 27, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
This call to action is in collaboration with Identity, Inc, a nonprofit organization serving Latino youth and families in Montgomery County. Assisting us in this ministry is Bare Necessities Foundation, formed recently to assist migrants in setting up housing and others in need locally.
Diego Uriburu, Executive Director of Identity, spoke at our October 23, 2022 Adult Forum about the unique situation faced by many migrants who have been bussed to the DC area, but do not have family connections here. Mr. Uriburu asked us to consider: “How do you start a life in a place where you don’t know anyone?” Without employment, benefits, work authorization, or family connections the newcomers are relying on county support, the faith community, and the outstanding work of Identity to provide them a chance to start a life in Montgomery County. Identity has been working to help the uniquely challenged newcomers find jobs, get children enrolled in school, and transition from immediate shelter provided by the county to next-step rental housing. Mr. Uriburu urged parishioners to consider donating beds and other furnishings to transform the modest living spaces, often small units or rented basement rooms, into habitable dwellings.
Over the past few months, under the leadership of Cindy Anderson and Liz Jones, St. John’s has established a process to make this happen—from soliciting and accepting donations of select items to apartment set-up. But we can’t do it without your help!
Use this SignUp Genius to see the list of furnishings, clothing, and household items requested. Then please consider contributing new or gently used items—or donating via Breeze (select “Give to Furnishing Newcomers”)—to help these neighbors in need.
