Nourishing Bethesda: Volunteers Needed

by John Ross

We need you! Nourishing Bethesda, the St. John’s food insecurity initiative, feeds multiple meal’s worth of groceries to an average of 1,300 people every week, including some 500 children. Last Friday, we handed out seven tons of food at the B-CC Rescue Squad!

We’re entirely staffed by volunteers who order the food and then pack, transport, and distribute it. Our St. John’s parishioners are joined in this effort by many people from the community. We have all sorts of opportunities for volunteering with all levels of physical ability. It’s a great chance to do what our faith calls us to do – all within a COVID-safe environment – not to mention to meet new people and catch up with long-time friends.

We pack the dry goods food into bags on Thursday night between 6:00 and 8:00 pm at church under the able direction of Nancy Adams and Greg Murdock. Between 10:30 and 11:30 am on Friday mornings, Bill Kenety and Brook Berry organize the transportation of the packed food to the rescue squad. From 10:30 am to noon, Annelise Hafer and others organize set up, then Elaine Curtin and other captains direct the packing of produce and distribution from noon to 3:00 pm. Tom Kennedy and Penny Winder run our traffic control department, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Beth Campbell takes information from each car, and Margaret Hilton does the same for our walk-up folks. Anne Ruskowski runs our walk-up table. We need about 50 volunteers a week – it’s a full community effort!

We’d love to see you at church or the B-CC Rescue Squad. Give volunteering a whirl and see if it’s something you like. I can guarantee that the smiles of gratitude from our recipients make the effort more than worthwhile!

For volunteer opportunities, please log on to our sign-up genius and see what’s open. Or feel free to contact John Ross (jfr@johnfross.com) or Anne Derse (aderse@stjohnsnorwood.org) if you have questions.

We also can provide a chunk of SSL hours for students. Please pass this on to your friends and neighbors, too. You can use this flyer to let them know about Nourishing Bethesda and how they can get involved!

Look forward to seeing you out doing God’s work!
