Join Eco-Action Efforts for Eco-Justice

by Carolyn Peirce, Eco-Action Team

Wonderful news! We have reached our goal of $2500! Thanks again to all who participated in this year’s Lenten Eco-Pledge to be donated to organizations in DC’s Ward 8 to promote environmental justice: Ward 8 Woods Conservancy, The Well at Oxon Run, and DC Greens. Now we plan to learn more and we invite YOU to join us!

On Saturday, June 5, some members of the Eco-Action Team will volunteer with Ward 8 Woods Conservancy, a grassroots nonprofit that works to improve more than 500 acres of forest in Ward 8. Our St. John’s volunteers will help to restore the woodland ecology and promote healthy and sustainable living by helping to remove invasive vines and trash. It’s not a glamorous job but it is a necessary one! Come join us and be ready to work at Fort Stanton Recreation Center, 1812 Erie St SE. Volunteers should sign up in advance by emailing

Then, sometime in the summer or early fall, we plan to visit The Well at Oxon Run, a transformative, 50,000 sq. ft. urban farm and accessible oasis for health and community-building in Ward 8. Ground-breaking will be in May and we will wait until they have made some progress in construction. The project promises to be an anchor and asset in a historically overlooked part of Ward 8 and will be singularly differentiated from other urban agriculture installations by the world-class architectural and artistic elements embedded in The Well’s design and construction.

Our third group is DC Greens, the parent organization for The Well. In 2021, DC Greens will serve more than 35,000 food insecure residents through their Food Access, School Support, and Urban Agriculture programs. You can read more about it here.
