Team Iqraa (“Read” in Arabic) is kicking off a new running season on May 8. As long as we are constrained by the COVID pandemic, we’ll run while practicing social distancing and wearing/carrying masks. And now at last conditions are improving. We invite you to join us for the 2021 running campaign!
Iqraa is a non-partisan, DC area running group, endorsed by the Holy Land Committee. Iqraa runners meet to train on Saturdays and raise funds to provide university scholarships to meritorious Palestinian university students in the West Bank, Gaza, and Jordan who need assistance to pursue their studies.
We’ve been running since 2008 — mostly marathons and half-marathons, and shorter distances — and the funds we raise go directly to United Palestinian Appeal (UPA), a local 501(C)3 charitable organization, for implementation at universities in the West Bank, Gaza, and Jordan. UPA has a 4 star rating – the highest – from Charity Navigator, which measures the financial health, accountability, and transparency of NGOs. Several St John’s parishioners are among our Iqraa veterans: Jay Mallin, Peter Craig, and Kirk Campbell (see photo above).
We plan two Zoom information sessions to talk about the Iqraa program ahead of the May 8 training start:
- Wednesday, April 7 at 6:30 pm
- Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 pm
