Season of Service: Lenten Journey Against Hunger

On February 17 this year, we celebrate Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent and the 40-day journey to Easter. During Lent, we remember Jesus and his sacrifice for us and his call to love our neighbors as ourselves. This Lenten season, we invite you to join us in remembering those of us who are experiencing hunger.

St. John’s Nourishing Bethesda feeds more than 300 in-need families every week, and the numbers continue to grow. The “Reverse Advent Calendar” food drive that St. John’s conducted last year proved a huge success, enabling Nourishing Bethesda to feed an additional 25 families each week. We would like to launch a second food drive during Lent so that we can feed even more of our neighbors.

Please click here for a list of suggested items. Please give at whatever level you feel comfortable with. We ask that you provide your items, if possible, in reusable bags. Also, please select items packaged in unbreakable containers.

We invite you to drop off your donations on Holy Saturday, April 3, from 10:00 am to noon at the West Avenue entrance of St. John’s. Volunteers will be on hand to receive your offerings. You will not need to leave your vehicle, but please be masked.

If you are unable to make this drop-off time or would like to volunteer to assist with receiving and organizing food donations, please contact Dawn Molloy at If you would prefer to make a financial contribution, you can do so through Breeze or by check made out to St. John’s Norwood, with a notation for Nourishing Bethesda. Student volunteers may earn SSL hours.
