On Sunday, September 29, the Rev. Sari Ateek will lead a prayer vigil for victims of gun violence from 3:00 – 4:00 pm in the Nave. We will remember all those killed and wounded by the growing epidemic of gun violence in our country: In 2017 (the most recent year for which data are available), guns were used to kill 40,000 people and wound another 134,000.
Come to the vigil prepared to be inspired by songs, prayers, and readings from the Qur’an, Hebrew Scriptures, and Bible. Service leaders will include Imam Tarek Elgawhary (the Islamic Community Center of Potomac), Steve Klitzman (Temple Sinai), and our own Deacon Anne Derse. Young people from St. John’s will lead the prayers of the people in response to gun violence and provide instrumental music. The service will end with time for quiet reflection and lighting of candles in honor of those who have died or been wounded in gun violence.
Following the service, you are invited to the Parish Hall for light refreshments. The Parish Hall will also offer opportunities to write comfort cards to survivors of gun violence and to share your hopes for a brighter, more peaceful future.
