The Holy Land Committee (HLC) and Iqraa (“Read,” in Arabic) invite you to make a commitment this spring that combines fitness and good works by joining the Iqraa running team.
Here’s how it works:
We/Iqraa train with a charity coalition, Marathon Charity Cooperation, that provides coaches and on-course support for a group run every Saturday from May 4th until your race in late September or October (depending on the race). Training mileage increases incrementally (and you’ll do 2-3 short weekly runs on your own) so beginning runners can succeed. Training starts on May 4! You can check out MCC’s website here.
We/Iqraa raise funds that go to United Palestinian Appeal for a scholarship program at universities in the West Bank and Gaza, which UPA oversees. UPA is an IRS-certified 501(c)3 charitable organization founded in 1978. Iqraa has partnered with UPA since 2008 to support educational programs in the West Bank and Gaza. Our motto is “Running for a brighter Palestine!” You can check out UPA’s website here.
Runners can generate contributions through any (legal) path your imagination takes you to. Typically, runners conduct individual or collaborative outreach projects (direct appeal, host a party, etc), volunteer for MCC activities, or contribute directly thru UPA’s Iqraa page. UPA has the highest (4 star) rating awarded by Charity Navigator and a very low overhead.
Our races: typically, the Prince William Half-Marathon on September 29th and the Marine Corps Marathon on October 27th. Runners can also find other local races to run on behalf of Iqraa, as long as you commit to gaining contributions to support education in Palestine.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, so come and give it a try!
