Church-Wide Book Read This Lent

Dear St. John’s,

This Lent, I am encouraging our entire congregation to join me in reading a short but profound book called Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity by Adam Hamilton. Hamilton is the Senior Pastor of Church of the Resurrection, the largest United Methodist Church in America. In his book, Hamilton uses his very down-to-earth communication style to speak to the power of contentment in a culture of consumerism that constantly tells us we don’t have enough. This simple book has had an impact on my own life as it has for many others who have found wisdom in its pages. You can find the book here on Amazon.

One of the wonderful things about reading the same book as a faith community is the opportunity to engage in conversation with others at coffee hour or through intentional small groups. Each of the four chapters of this book plus the Epilogue offers some questions for consideration that can provide a wonderful framework for a group discussion or Bible study. I hope that you will consider forming a small group with other friends from church to discuss this book as a special practice during Lent – maybe even over a meal. I will also be hosting a gathering at church in the Lounge on the following Tuesdays in Lent from 6-7:30pm, and will be devoting each meeting to discussing a different chapter of the book:

March 19 – Chapter 1
March 26 – Chapter 2
April 2 – Chapter 3
April 9 – Chapter 4
April 16 – Epilogue

Ash Wednesday begins on March 6th (one month from now), and I wanted to give you plenty of time to get your hands on a copy of the book before then. We will provide ten copies in the church library for those wishing to check one out instead of purchasing it. I hope that through our reading and discussions, this Lenten season will be a time of truly discovering greater joy through simplicity and generosity.

Yours in Christ,
