Have you noticed the two high schoolers singing with the St. John’s Choir at the 11:15 a.m. service each week? Thanks to generous gifts in memory of long-time choir member Girard Ordway and music-lover Phoebe “Marty” Bole Walker, we are able to offer two paid positions for high school musicians to sing with our adult choir during the season (September-May).
Intended to supplement the choral education they receive as part of their school choirs and voice lessons, these singers have the opportunity to be part of a section that includes gifted amateurs along with professional section leaders who model good vocal technique, professional attitude and musical phrasing. These young singers also have the chance to improve their own vocal and sight reading skills as the choir works on new repertoire to perform in church each Sunday.
We are pleased to announce that 10th grader Gillian Smith from Richard Montgomery High School and 11th grader Jon Geyer from B-CC High School have joined us for the season as recipients of these memorial gifts. Both are talented young musicians who bring energy and enthusiasm to the group along with their vocal abilities. I know both Girard and Marty would be delighted to know that they are able to support young musicians in a lifetime enjoyment of music.
