Position: Director of Youth & Family Ministries

St. John’s Norwood is a thriving and growing Episcopal church in the heart of downtown Bethesda. We are a dynamic church, building on our strengths as a stable congregation with an average Sunday attendance of 475. With beloved leaders and deep traditions, we are in the process of envisioning and embracing our evolving role in the lives of our parishioners and the larger community. The director of family ministries will play a key role in helping us shape our future.

We are looking for an energetic, creative, relational individual who has enthusiasm for family ministries. This is an opportunity to lead a well established program (average Sunday attendance of 150 children ages 3-18 with over 30 volunteer teachers) and, with church leadership, to create an expanded role.

The director will engage the children, youth and families of St. John’s fully into the life of our congregation by creating programs and experiences which build them as Christians and spiritual beings.

Responsibilities include directing and growing our church school, leading children’s chapel, supervising part-time youth group and nursery staff, and equipping parents and volunteer teachers to provide Christian education for our children in innovative and inspiring ways.

The director will be a key member of the staff leadership team and report to the Rector.

  • Specific duties include, but are not limited to:Actively welcoming new families on Sundays and connecting young people to the church school.
  • Recruiting and training volunteer teachers and providing curriculum materials.
  • Hands-on teaching.
  • Leading and implementing our valued traditions, including the Rite 13 ceremony and events, J2A curriculum, J2A pilgrimage every two years (2019), and a Christmas pageant.

The director of family ministries is a full time position with flexible hours. Sunday attendance is required as well as attendance at weekday staff meetings and some evening events. We offer a competitive salary and benefits including health, dental, pension and a continuing education allowance.


  • Experience in program coordination, volunteer recruitment, and training staff.
  • Experience working with children & teens, and strong interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Creativity in and commitment to Christian education in an open and inclusive church environment.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
