Op Shop Supports Hurricane and Refugee Ministries

Did you know that since 1951, St. John’s has supported charitable activities in our community through sales at our Opportunity Shop, located just three blocks from the church at 4504 Walsh Street? Since 2012 alone, the Op Shop has contributed over $87,000 to that great work, including a September 2017 contribution of $17,000 to our Outreach Committee for hurricane relief and our new Refugee Ministry. Thank you to all Op Shop volunteers for making such generosity possible.

St. John’s has some of its deepest roots in the community through the Op Shop: from about 35 St. John’s parishioners work with over 60 volunteers from our local community to receive, sort, price, display and sell donated and consigned goods, to collectors looking for treasures and savvy shoppers looking for a bargain. The Op Shop team is a fun and special fellowship of service at St. John’s. If you’d like to meet new people at our church and in our community, and you have a taste for retail, talent in management, or an eye for marketing, join us. The Op Shop offers flexible volunteer opportunities to fit every schedule—work an hour a month or every day, with many options in between.

Discovering a great gift or bargain while shopping at the Op Shop is not only fun, it supports St. John’s  Outreach ministries, so shop often! Check our new web page to learn more about our hours for donations, consignments, and shopping, as well as details on items we accept.

If you’d like to know more about volunteering, email our Community Life Coordinator Anne Derse.

Op Shop and Outreach Contributions for Hurricane Relief

Thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers at the St. John’s Opportunity Shop, a contribution of $17,000 has been made to St. John’s Outreach Committee, $5,000 of which has been disbursed to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for hurricane relief.

The Board of the Op Shop made an additional $3,000 discretionary donation for hurricane relief .

Of the money that the Vestry allocated to the Outreach Committee for 2017, $1,000 has been sent to ERD for disaster relief after Hurricane Harvey and another $1,000 after Hurricane Irma.

In summary, through the good work of both the Op Shop and Outreach Committee, St. John’s contributed a total of $10,000 to ERD for hurricane relief. Thanks to the parishioners and volunteers at St. John’s and the Op Shop for their part in making this happen.
