“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
– Ecclesiastes 3:1
Dear St. John’s,
I am writing to inform you of three significant staff transitions that will be occurring in the near future.
Nancy Derr, Church School Director
After 19 years of devoted service to our children and teens, Nancy has decided to announce her retirement. It goes without saying that it is Nancy’s leadership and vision that has transformed our Church School into the vibrant program that it is today, and although she will not be leaving our church community, her contribution to the program life of our church will be greatly missed. Nancy’s official last day will be on Sunday, October 1st, on which we will hold a goodbye party to celebrate her ministry among us. Please contact the church office if you would like to volunteer your time or culinary skills to help with the celebration on October 1st.
Pamela Terry, Children’s Chapel Minister
Pamela has won over the hearts of those youngest among us with her infectious personality and faithful facilitation of our Children’s Chapel every Sunday. Pamela joined the St. John’s staff in September 2013, and is now moving to New York to pursue a Masters in Social Work at NYU. We will say goodbye to Pamela on her last Sunday with us, August 13, and send her off with a blessing and celebration of her ministry.
Cynthia Grimes, Youth Group Leader
Herself a former member of our church school program and youth group, Cynthia has served our 7th-12th graders for the past five years as both co-leader and most recently as the sole youth group leader. Her attentiveness to our teens and leadership at our youth group’s annual summer mission trip to West Virginia, Camp Joy, are among the many gifts that she has brought to the program. Cynthia is stepping down from this ministry to pursue a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Science in Disaster, Resilience, and Leadership from Tulane. She will be leading our participation in Camp Joy this summer in mid-July. Please join me in thanking Cynthia for her devoted and loving service to our teens.
A search process for the next Church School Directer will be conducted by a search committee this summer, with the final candidates to meet with me upon my return from my sabbatical. The new position will be reconfigured to include leadership of the Children’s Chapel on Sunday mornings. A notice of this job opening will be posted soon.
I extend my deep gratitude to Nancy, Pamela, and Cynthia for their tremendous contributions to the life of our parish and especially to our children and teens.
